In April, LAOWAI Here hosted several foreign talent activities:

First, the networking and internship event with students from ICN Business School in France. At this event, we helped students have on-site interviews with5 enterprises from different industries. We also held a session with MBA students from CASS Business School, University of London, discussing Chengdu’s business environment. On April28th, as a professional HR platform, we shared our insight into the career development of foreign expats on the“Chengdu Talent Day."

在这一场场外籍人才的专项活动中,大家都在关心一个话题:外籍人才在华发展的趋势是怎样的?哪些行业未来会给优质的外籍人才提供更多的职业发展机会?

During all of these events, everyone seemed to be curious about the same questions: What is the development trend of foreign talents in China? Which industries will provide career development opportunities for qualified foreign talents in the future?

近年来,选择来中国寻求职业发展机会的外国人才数量呈现逐年增加的趋势。

汇丰银行(HSBC)2017/18年度的“移居探索者调查”(Expat Explorer Survey)报告称,移居中国可以为移居者提供诸多职业和收入优势。在中国,超过一半的外籍人士任职于教育或制造业,他们的收入明显高于其他移居者——通常每年可多挣得7万美元。此外,据报道,同在母国生活相比,选择来中国的外籍人士可以获得更多存款和可支配收入。

The number of foreign talents choosing to come to China for career development opportunities is increasing year on year. 

HSBC’s Expat Explorer Survey2017/18 reported that a move to China offers expats numerous career and income advantages. With over half of expats in China working in education or manufacturing, they earn significantly more than the average expat – typically an extra $70,000 annually. In addition, expats here reported to save more and have more disposable income than they did at home.

作为世界经济强国之一,中国也是在汇丰的全球职业发展排名中位居第二的国家。参与调查的外籍人士中,不仅有70%表示中国为他们提供了很好的就业前景(全球只有54%),而且有一半的外籍人士表示,在中国他们能获得更多学习新技能的机会。

目前,外籍人士在华就业排名前三的行业是教育、服务业和金融服务业。尽管,一些外国人认为他们面临着来自中国专业人士的激烈竞争,但事实上,外籍人士拥有属于他们自身的相对优势。这包括丰富的国际人脉经验、高流动性、对特定商业文化的知识、语言或商务英语、特殊领域专业知识等。这些优势使得外籍人士受到高度追捧。

As one of the world’s economic powerhouses, China is also second in HSBC’s global rankings for career progression. Not only did70% of expats surveyed say that China offers strong job prospects (compared with only54% globally) but half of expats said that they have more opportunities to acquire new skills here than at home.

At present, the top three employment sectors are education, service and financial services. Although some foreigners believe they face fierce competition from Chinese professionals, they are in fact highly sought after due to their comparative advantages, including international networking experience, mobility, knowledge of specific business cultures, foreign languages or business English and special areas of expertise.

随着中国对外国人才的需求持续增长,以及日趋激烈的国际人才间竞争状况,了解中国招聘趋势的发展方向以及最佳工作机会,对外籍人才来说非常重要。

As demand for foreign talent in China continues to grow and the competition for international talent increases, it is important to know in which direction recruiting tendencies are heading and where to find the best opportunities.

2019人才趋势方向

1.国际学校

随着政策的变化和需求的增加,国际教育是中国教育市场中一个受到高度重视的领域。尽管有免费的公立学校,但公立教育部门教育资源短缺,导致许多中国家庭寻求私立学校教育作为铺造学业的途径。随着中国家庭财富水平的不断提高,以帮助学生进入全球知名大学和铺就职业道路而闻名的私立学校教育正变得越来越容易为家庭所接受。就读于私立学校一方面使得孩子们可以在家附近就学,另一方面也为孩子们去往国外上大学做好了准备。

The Key Talent Trends in2019

1. International Schools

International education is a highly valued trend emerging within China’s education market as a result of policy changes and increasing demand. Despite having free public schools, a shortage of education resources in the public education sector has led to families seeking private options as a route to academic success. As levels of wealth in China continue to rise, private schools, with their reputation for pathway preparation to global universities and careers, are becoming more accessible to families. They allow children to be close to home prior to university yet receive an education that prepares them well for university studies abroad.

中国家庭对国际学校的选择有非常具体实际的考量,希望老师有特定的技能和经验,以英语为母语的教师在整体师资队伍中的比例高,能够提供足够专业的在西方受推崇的双重教育(即以问询、学生、和协作学习为主导的模式)。这是私立学校被认为具有更强的教学能力的特点。然而,师资力量的不足,也让国际学校在中国的发展面临挑战。

目前,中国已有563所私立国际学校,其学生数量已超过24.55万人(以中国公民为主)。到2028年,这一数字预计将增加到80多万名。如果按照目前的增长速度来看,截止至2023/23学年,国际学校将需要雇用大约64,700名教师,其中至少需要37,000名外籍教师。

International schools are being selected by families for very specific reasons and therefore expect the teachers to have specific skills and experiences i.e. a high proportion of foreign, native English-speaking teachers, who deliver a dual curriculum with sufficient expertise in Western methods of teaching. This is a distinguishing feature which allows such schools to be considered the best schools in China. This is, however, a challenge for this developing market sector which faces a shortage of sufficiently qualified teachers.

 Currently over245,500 students (primarily Chinese nationals) are in enrolled in the563 International Chinese Private Schools already established in China, but by2028 this number is predicted to increase to over800,000 children attending such schools. If the current rate of growth is maintained for the next five years, around64,700 teachers will need to be employed in the2023/23 academic year, at least37,000 of who will be foreign.

2.科技人才

中国一直缺乏科学、技术、工程和数学方面的专家,这为资深的外籍人才创造了机会。针对这一需求,越来越多的公司也意识到了国际猎头公司在帮助寻找国际化科技人才方面的重要性,让其帮忙制定有效的采购策略,吸引外籍人才。

2.“STEM” Candidates

China has an ongoing shortage of experts in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics, creating opportunities for talented individuals at all levels of seniority. International head-hunting companies are becoming increasingly important in allowing employers to have effective sourcing strategies in the competition for such talent.

3.互联网,电子商务和数字技术

随着数字时代的到来,中国数字转型的速度也在迅速加快。目前,中国已成为仅次于美国和日本的全球第三大IT市场。在数字技术和电子商务领域,中国也将继续努力引领世界。因此,各公司也在积极寻找具有相关行业经验的候选人,以创建和领导新业务开发和制定营销策略。

3. Internet, E-commerce & Digital Technology

As China embraces the digital era, the rate of digital transformation is rapidly accelerating. Now established as the world’s3rd largest IT market behind the USA and Japan, China continues to strive to lead the world in the ongoing development of digital technology and e-commerce. Subsequently, companies are on the hunt for candidates with digital experience to create and lead new business development and marketing strategies. 

4.医疗业

由于人口老龄化和日趋增多的患病人口,社会对医疗保健行业的需求促发了中国医疗行业的改革。同时,医疗市场的上行轨迹,也受到了强大的公共和私营领域的财政激励的推动,如在研发方面的巨额投资等。因此,医疗器械和制药行业也越来越多地在寻找具有业务开发和研发专长的人才。

4. Healthcare

As a result of a rapidly aging and increasingly ill population, demand for healthcare in China has led to a reform within the healthcare industry to deliver a higher quality of life to its citizens. The upward trajectory of the healthcare market is also driven by strong financial incentives from both the public and private sectors, including a huge investment in R&D. Industries within medical devices and pharmaceuticals are increasingly on the lookout for talent with expertise in business development and R&D.

5.工业自动化

作为场地搬迁的另一种选择,企业正转向工业自动化,以应对中国大陆不断飙升的制造成本。中国现在拥有世界上最大的工业机器人市场,预计中国工厂的工业机器人数量将以平均每年25%的速度增长。除了降低总体成本和提高效率,工业自动化技术的发展还将使中国制造业从低端产品向更高价值的电子设备和其他产品领域迈进。为适应该趋势,中国也将引进越来越多的相关领域工程师和研发专家。

5. Industrial Automation

As an alternative to relocation, companies are turning to industrial automation to deal with the soaring costs of manufacturing in mainland China. China is now the biggest market in the world for industrial robots, with the number of these robots in China’s factories expected to increase by an average of25% each year.

In addition to reducing overall costs and increasing efficiency, the increase in industrial automation technologies will allow the Chinese manufacturing industry to progress from low-end products to high-value areas such as electronics and other forms of technology. Engineers and R&D experts with the knowledge and skills to adapt products are critical in this process and therefore high in demand.

6.中国企业在全球的崛起

这将很快成为当代世界经济史上的重要一章。中国人口众多,劳动力廉价,外国直接投资(FDI)丰富,现已成为全球范围内的低成本制造商。然而,经过多年的发展,未来贸易发展空间不再广阔,因此越来越多的中国企业选择对外直接投资(ODI)和“走出去”开发国际市场。

6. The Global Rise of Chinese Enterprises 

This is soon to be an important chapter in contemporary world economic history.  With its large population, cheap labour and abundant capital from foreign direct investment (FDI), China has become the world’s low-cost manufacturer. However, with further growth in trade limited, we have seen a huge rise in outward direct investment (ODI) and the number of companies choosing to'Go Global'.

受中国的“走出去”策略的影响,对具有全球化的思维模式,在管理、并购和处理组织变革方面具有丰富的经验的双语人力资源人才的需求也会增加。

As a result of China’s‘Go Global’ campaign, we will see an increase in the demand for bilingual HR professionals with a global mindset and experience in management, merger and acquisitions, and handling organisational change. 

7.泛港珠澳地区

泛港珠澳地区是指中国政府计划打造的包含香港、澳门和广东省的世界级城市群。这是中国经济发展战略的一部分,目的是创造可观的经济区域,以促进新的商业机会,挑战同样位于海湾的全球城市,如纽约或东京。

7. The Greater Bay Area

 The Greater Bay Area refers to the Chinese government plan to integrate Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong into a world class city cluster. This is part of China’s strategy to create sizeable areas of economic strength in order to promote new business opportunities and challenge global cities also situated on bays, such as New York or Tokyo.

它被认为是世界第三大贸易区和一个新兴的技术中心,是所有行业组织的投资目的地。除高流动性的人才外,精通粤语、普通话和英语的多语种候选人也将深受雇主欢迎。

Considered the third largest trading area in the world and an up-and-coming technology hub, it is a huge investment destination for organisations across all industries. In addition to a highly mobile workforce, multilingual candidates proficient in Cantonese, Mandarin and English are highly sought-after by employers.
